I am honored and grateful to be given the opportunity to run the 121st Boston Marathon for Compassionate Care ALS in memory of my cousin, Thomas Andrew George.
In November 2014, our family received devastating news. My cousin, Tom George, had been diagnosed with ALS. In my professional life as a rehabilitation physician, I was all too familiar with this horrific disease, but the full impact of ALS on those diagnosed and their loved ones was never real to me until my cousin’s diagnosis. Both Tom and his wife, Rebecca, benefited in countless ways from the support of Compassionate Care ALS. The physical, emotional and spiritual toll that ALS exacts on both those diagnosed and their families is unfathomable. CCALS ministers those diagnosed and to their families on all these levels. Their services fill a critical void in ALS care by providing desperately needed support on these levels to those affected.
Tom was known for his generosity and big-heartedness, as well as his sense of fun-loving adventure. Since his passing in January 2016, I have tried to hold his spirit close to my heart. As I take on this challenging race to raise much-needed funds for a very deserving cause, I know he will be there with me, cheering me on to the finish line.
