CCALS has developed the “Cultivating
Compassion,” workshop series, which educates more than 500
individuals annually about the realities of living and dying with
ALS with a focus is on providing sensitive, compassionate care for
all involved in end of life issues. Our audiences have included persons
with ALS and their family and caregivers, health care professionals,
friends of ALS patients, and others in the community. We have
several different workshops within “Cultivating Compassion” each
are tailored to specific audiences, topics, and circumstances related
to the ALS journey.
Cultivating Compassion” typically focuses on one of the following
topics: ALS Naked: Living with ALS; Providing Compassionate Care;
Awakening to Living and Dying; Care of the Caregiver; or Meditation
and Contemplative Practice. Sometimes we cover multiple topics and
target niche populations such as “Men of ALS,” “Women
of ALS”, “Caregiver to Caregiver”, or “Beyond
ALS” (for ALS patient surviving partners).
“Circles of Support” are the more intimate arm of “Cultivating
Compassion,” where Compassionate Care ALS staff guide small
or large groups of family, friends or ALS caregivers in facilitated
dialogue. We lead these sessions at the request of families
and usually travel and present at their homes. We discuss everything
from logistics of care and how to organize community support to coping
with grief and remaining compassionate, even through the toughest
situations.
We also regularly conduct in-services for healthcare
workers and speaking engagements for groups of all sizes.
